Vinegar for My Lord. 18 inches x 24 inches. Acrylic on canvas. 2013.
The Death of Jesus
“Later, knowing that everything had now been
finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in
it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’
lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is
finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” - John 19:28-30
It was the last painting I did after a week’s silent retreat. On
reflecting on the crucifixion of Jesus, I asked myself what role I would play
in the scene. I found that I wanted to be at the front, near the foot of cross
(instead of just being a far off bystander) so that if Jesus needed my help, I would be available. I found myself as
the one who would hand him vinegar on a sponge, as opposed to say one of the
women who was holding Mary, his mother. I see it as my being able to do what I
do best, and to use my talents to serve him in the way I am most comfortable
doing. Also, in witnessing the events, I know first hand what happened – a way of
being a more credible witness of the faith.
The reflection is comforting because although I am sinner, I am allowed
to approach Jesus. He receives me because he loves me and every one of us has a
role to play in support of his work of salvation.
